Breaking News from the FDA

Breaking News:

July 24, 2008 — The FDA is warning consumers not to eat jalapeno peppers after finding one that tested positive for the strain of salmonella linked to an ongoing national outbreak.

So far:

Numbers of people symptomatically ill from this Salmonella:    1,200 people in 43 states, Canada, and Washington, D.C.
Total population for US & Canada = 334,530,088
Therefore, 0.000358% of the populations of two countries are affected, or an incidence rate of .358 per 100,000 persons.
And one pepper has been discovered.

Some comparison diseases:
Lupus incidence 3.8 per 100,000
Heart attack-related deaths 194.2 per 100,000 (white males)
Dermatomyositis 5.5 cases per million (or .5 per 100,000)

According to the Feds, ""We're pulling all the stops out to push this investigation hard and fast to narrow this." (David Acheson, MD, FDA's associate commissioner for food)

How many even know what dermatomyositis is?

A better question:  How many people are going to avoid jalapeno peppers opting instead for McDonald's french fries?
